Michigan Events in February

Rolling into our 181st year of statehood, we Michiganders have found innumerous ways to celebrate and utilize our geography and resources to their fullest.  From Ironwood to Monroe, enjoy our monthly compilation of weekend events happening all over this great state!

Michigan Free Fishing Weekend – February 17 and 18

For two days, fishing licensing fees are waived for all inland and Great Lake­s’ waters for residents and out­-of­-state ­visitors.  Enjoy some leisure time by fishing freely on one of our 11,000 inland lakes or 30,000 miles of shoreline and create a tradition that lasts for generations.

U.P. & NORTHERN MICHIGAN

Saint Ignace – Labatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championship – February 16 through 18

One of the few pond hockey tournaments where the “pond” is actually one of the Great Lakes.  Teams from multiple states will compete in over 300 games throughout the weekend, so no matter when you go you should be able to catch one.

Beulah – Annual Winterfest – February 10

With a poker run, frozen turkey bowling and fish toss, and a midday chili cook­-off, there’s certainly something for everybody at this traditional event.  Bring a blanket for the closing fireworks and following beach bonfire.

WEST & CENTRAL MICHIGAN

Coopersville – Annual Coopersville Outhouse 500 – February 24

No matter the weather, this festival commences the last Saturday of every February.  Traveling the wrong way down one­-way Main Street, teams race their outhouses side by side to be king of the johns.  There is also a chili cook-off and toilet seat decorating competition with proceeds going to Coopersville/Polkton Firemen’s Club.

Okemos – Moonlight Skiing and Snowshoeing – February 10

For a few moonlit hours, glide through the trails of Harris Nature Center and enjoy the peacefulness that comes with these wintery activities.

SOUTH & EAST MICHIGAN

Kalamazoo – Garage Sale Art Fair – February 24

Another annual end-of-the-month event, this is has proven to be a favorite of art enthusiasts as it enters its 22nd year.  Artists from across the state set up shop in order to sell supplies, overstocks, and everything in between.

Detroit – 11th Annual Motown Winter Blast! – February 7 through 8

Originally created as the backdrop for Super Bowl XL, this event is entering its 11th year as a Detroit favorite.  Snow machines create a winter wonderland within the city, where festivalgoers can fly down a zip line, slip down a giant ice slide, enjoy free ice skating at nearby Campus Martius Park, and more.
